Michigan and Duke will Square Off in Maui

Michigan and Duke will Square Off in Maui

By Raymond Rolak

U. of M. Impressive in Upset of Memphis

LAHAINA—  The Blue Devils have been the kings on Maui, winning titles in 1992, 1997, 2001 and 2007.  “That’s the reason it’s been such a great tournament because they’ve always had great fields,” coach Mike Krzyzewski said.  “This one measures up to any of the others in the past,” he added with the famous Kaanapali Beach in the background.  Over the years, Duke has been 13-0 here.  This was said on the dais before all the game action started.

Michigan has a pedigree of winning here also.  They won in 1985 and 1988 and right now they are hot.  They haven’t had the New York-North Carolina-Hawaii travel schedule that Duke just endured.

It is not a normal student break nor is it a vacation.  The famous Aloha hospitality will be in abundance but beach diversions are not conducive to basketball preparations.  Duke and Coach ‘K’ are in Maui for the Thanksgiving recess.

All are participating in the EA Sports Maui Invitational.   It is an impressive field of teams, including No. 4 UConn, No. 10 Memphis, No. 12 Kansas, No. 17 Michigan, Tennessee, UCLA, Georgetown and Chaminade.

Duke freshman Austin Rivers had four 3-pointers to help sink Tennessee 77-67.  Tim Hardaway Jr. had 21 points and Michigan freshman Trey Burke had 14 as the Wolverines upset Memphis 73-61.

The Lahaina Civic Center will be rocking for this one.  The two winners meet Wednesday on ESPN at 7:00 p.m. EST.

When asked about the highly rated Memphis defense, Hardaway said, “I think it was just preparation.  We were talking to our coaches and finding an easy way to score on offense. We took advantage of it and it helped us out in the long run.

Michigan coach John Beilein was trying to squeeze in playing time for most.  He said post-game, “We’re going to be here for three days win or lose.  So I wanted to make sure we gave a little more rest than we had been giving.  Really, we stopped and embraced the moment.”

After his game Krzyzewski said, “But John (Beilein) does a great job.  He’s got a veteran team.  For them to beat Memphis like that, they must have played a great basketball game, because Memphis is one of the most talented teams in the country.”  He added, “I have to get on Detroit’s time zone now.  It has been a hectic week.”

The latter is referring to the hectic pace since breaking the all time coaching wins record at Madison Square Garden in New York.  The Coach ‘K’ total is now at 905.

Sports Hawaii Editors Note: In 1985, Raymond Rolak, Michael Reghi, Jon Brekke and Brian Kohne broadcast the first national telecast of the Maui Basketball Tournament.  Michigan beat Kansas State 80-58 with Dell Curry of Virginia Tech named as Outstanding Player.

Pali Playing at Next Level

Ypsilanti–  He first went the California Community College route.  Now he is making a name as a linebacker and defensive back for Eastern Michigan University.  Bryan Pali, the 6’0” junior from Kamahameha Schools has played in every game for the Eagles this season.  He made the leap from Orange Coast Community College to Division-I football after two seasons. “The Mid-American Conference is definitely a step up.  Everything is faster,” said Pali.

Pali and three other JC transfers have transformed EMU to a potential Bowl team.  Against Ball State, Pali had a nifty interception that stalled a drive by sophomore quarterback sensation.

Keith Wenning.  Next week’s game against Buffalo will decide the season for EMU (5-4).  The Eagles need two more wins to be Bowl bound.  They have not been to a Bowl since the 1987 upset win over San Jose State in the California Bowl.

The Kihei native son credits his success to his junior development days on Maui.  “We had a great youth program before high school that let me grow at my pace.  If we win two more we will be Bowl eligible.  That will give us 13 more practices for next season.”

Eastern Michigan coach Ron English is a defensive specialist.  He had been Defensive Coordinator at the University of Michigan previously and stresses defense.  He said after the Ball State game, “Pali has an instinct for the ball carrier.  He knows how to stick.  Toughness is a learned trait and he has it, added English.”

Pali’s basketball coach at Kamahameha Schools, Lance Cagasan said, “He always played a strong “D”, it made the whole team better on the floor.”

Besides the interception, Pali had four tackles and assisted on 12 more.  EMU, in front of 6,000 on a warn sunny football Saturday, lost to the Cardinals 33-31, on Steven Schott’s 44 yard field goal with nine second left.  Ball State is also in the hunt for a Bowl at 6-4.

The EMU defense had limited the Cardinals to just 91 yards rushing on 22 carries, but Wenning picked up the slack, completing 20-of-35 passes for 284 yards and two scores.  The game was televised on ESPN-Plus.

The Eagles will stay in Rynearson Stadium for a second straight week when they host East Division rival University at Buffalo Saturday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m.

Warrior Forever: Travis Sims

Warrior Forever:  Travis Sims
by:  Sam Murai

Aloha Sports Hawaii Fans!  Periodically we will catch up with a Warrior athlete from the past.  If you have a favorite athlete you would like us to catch up with, send your suggestion to sammurai@sportshawaii.com

When current Hawaii football is brought up on television media, internet message boards, and casual football fan chatter, the topic will always revolve around Hawaii’s passing game.

However, twenty years ago when Hawaii football was mentioned, media and football fans would immediately note Hawaii’s dominating run first triple option.   No other football program in the last twenty years has done a complete one hundred eighty in style of play.  Hawaii is the only program to go from a run oriented, control the clock offense; to a pass every down, time of possession means little, attack.

In 1992, Hawaii was the second leading rushing team in the Nation, just behind powerhouse Nebraska.  The 32.7 points that were put up each game would compare easily to today’s modern offensive output.  During that season, Hawaii grounded into submission #22 ranked Fresno State led by first round draft pick and future ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer, a Pitt Panther team led by future NFL quarterback Alex Van Pelt, BYU, and Oregon at Autzen Field.  The power running offense would pave the way for Hawaii’s first ever bowl game victory over Illinois and their future All-Pro linebackers Kevin Hardy and Simeon Rice.  Hawaii would finish the season 11-2 and have their first ever national ranking in the final polls at #20.

Quarterback Michael Carter and fullback Travis Sims were the lynchpins for Hawaii’s historic nationally ranked team.

Travis Sims rushed for 1,498 yards in 1992, first in Hawaii’s record book for rushing yards gained in a single season.   To put the record into perspective, no Warrior before or since, is within 350 yards of that mark.  Travis’ average of 124.8 rushing yards per game over the course of the season is also first in Hawaii’s record book.  It could be fairly inferred that Travis had a lot of carries during that season.  However, Travis needed just 220 carries to reach that mark (6.8 yards per carry, also a Hawaii record).  Even more amazing, despite Travis being the focal point of opponents’ defenses, Travis was only tackled for a loss twice in the season for minus five yards!

Travis is also entrenched in Hawaii’s record book at third for All-Time Rushing Yards and fifth for Most All-Purpose Yards in a Single Season.

*********

Sports Hawaii was able to catch up with Travis in Seattle, where he is currently the Vice-President of Sales for Makita USA, INC.

Sports Hawaii:  Aloha Travis!  Thanks so much for doing this for Sports Hawaii.  There are a lot of Hawaii fans wondering what you and your monstrous calves have been up to.    Do you have a family?

Aloha Sports Hawaii!  I am happy to be doing this for you guys!  I have a wonderful family; been married for 13 1/2 years now to an awesome Canadian girl that I met in Hawaii.  We have three extremely active kids; Cooper (12), Landon (9), and our little girl Alex(andra) (6).  She’s the princess of our family and lets everyone know it!  The boys play every sport possible, and I’m either coaching or helping out on each of their teams.  Cooper is a quarterback and Landon plays quarterback and running back.  And yes,  they have the speed and calves! People ask me that all the time.  ;)

Sports Hawaii:  At SH we remember how you used to wear jeans and have to cut a slit down the back by your calves just so you could fit.  Where do you reside now?

I was born and raised in the South Seattle area, and now I currently live in a little town south of Seattle called Gig Harbor.  It’s one of those little towns you see on a postcard: on the water with mountain views.  A great place to raise a family.   My parents live close by, so that’s a great thing for the kids too.

Sports Hawaii:  How often have you been back to Hawaii since leaving?  Are you planning on visiting any time soon?

Since my football days at Hawaii, I have been back a lot!   I get back to Hawaii about four times a year for work,  and another with my family for vacation.  I met my wife there, so Hawaii is very dear to both of our hearts.  We call it our second home.   I’ll be back in January for work and probably February with the family.

Sports Hawaii:  What is your fondest memory of Hawaii, not related to football. Any particular place to go or eat?  Favorite thing about Hawaii?

I have so many fond memories about Hawaii, but most of all I miss the people and how they took care of me while I was there.  I used to love going to Auntie Pasto’s for their carbonara; great stuff.  I still go there whenever I visit.  Also, I go to Buzz’s over in Lanikai.  My favorite thing about Hawaii is the relaxed feeling I have when I’m there.  I’m very laid back, so when I’m there, I feel like I’m home again.

Sports Hawaii:  What was your most memorable game?  Any particular run still stands out for you?

The Holiday Bowl was great because Illinois came into it taunting us and laughing at us because we were much smaller than them.  It was kind of nice to rub it in their face on national TV; I liked being the underdog.

Holiday Bowl Highlights

Also, playing UTEP was fun because we ran all over them. I had a 99 yard touchdown called back because of a phantom clip call by the refs.   We were all huddled up in our end zone and (Michael) Carter said, “Let’s drive this 99 yards and score a touchdown”.  I responded, “#&*% that, give me the damn ball and I’ll do it right now!”   We all laughed about it afterward!

Sports Hawaii:  In 1992, you ran for 1,498 yards.  Didn’t anyone know you needed just two more yards for 1,500?  For a lot of fans at SH, it still bothers us…..

I gotta admit, it bothered me a bit too, but my goal going into the season was 1,000 yards, so I can’t be too disappointed.  Funny though, I took all my linemen out to dinner after the season to say thanks for the help, and they brought me a cake that said “1,498, not 1,500, I guess I wasn’t good enough!”.   In current NCAA record keeping though, Bowl Games are included in season stats, People usually throw in the Holiday Bowl, which bumps me to 1,611.  :)

Sports Hawaii:  Ah, that is true, we should let UH know that they should adjust the record.  Hopefully some SH fans can sleep better knowing you actually did break 1,500…  What made you choose Hawaii back then?  Who else recruited you?

I was recruited by Oregon, Oregon State, Washington State, Idaho, Montana State, Air Force, Cornell, and a few other schools. I chose Hawaii for early playing time, an offense that suited me, and an up and coming program that ran the ball a lot.  Oh, and yes, staying near Diamond Head on the recruiting trip helped too. :)

Sports Hawaii:  Well, thankfully you chose to become a Warrior.  Do you still keep up with the Hawaii football program?

Absolutely!  I watch every game I can.  When I have time and I am in Hawaii, I’ll go to some of the games as well.

Sports Hawaii:  With the way Hawaii runs the spread offense now,  there is a good chance your record will last for a very, very, long time.  Any thoughts on that?  What do you think of the spread offenses we see everywhere like Hawaii?

I’m hoping the record lasts for awhile.  Anytime somebody does well or gets close I’ll usually get a call or two.  If somebody beats the record, good for them, they earned it.  I think the spread is very exciting and I actually use it a bit with my boys’ football teams.

Sports Hawaii:  That is great to hear, make sure your two boys are familiar with Hawaii’s offense and be sure to send them to Hawaii!  Tell us a funny story or two while at UH playing football.

My mom still cringes at this story, but looking back, I think it is pretty funny:  I got knocked out in the middle of the field at Aloha Stadium during a game.   When I woke up, I was face down on the old white helmet painted at mid-field.  I thought I was dead and seeing “the light”. Pretty wild, but I thought I was “gone” for a bit.

Another time, a giant moth flew in my helmet during a game.  I freaked out and thought it was a bat.  I ripped off my helmet and threw my helmet down and got a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct! Good times with the large moths out there!

Honestly though, everyday something happened with the guys that was funny.  You get a bunch of young men together and something is bound to happen.

Sports Hawaii:  Did you feel like a celebrity on the Hawaii campus during your time here?  Do you feel lucky or unlucky that there was no internet back then? Now, everyone knows the Hawaii players.  Back then there was no such media or exposure….

Yes,  I felt like a celebrity back then, it was great.  People were always talking about the games, and thank God we were winning!  I can’t imagine what it would have been like if we were losing. Even now, when I visit Hawaii, people will still stop me when I’m out there and buy me a drink to say Mahalo for the good times.

As far as the internet and the exposure it gives players today, I am mixed on that one.  It would’ve been nice for my friends and family to have access to me like they do now.  But on the other hand, I think a lot of the players get so caught up on what is being said about them it may have a negative impact on them.  The news paper, Robert Kekaula, and Jai Cunningham were all that we needed back then.

Sports Hawaii:  Aloha and thanks again Travis for being a part of our Warrior Forever series.  SH would like to wish you are your family our best wishes and continued success on your future endeavors!

Aloha guys!  Be seeing you in the Islands soon!

SportsHawaii.com interview with Tia Morales

Sports Hawaii: Hey Tia, welcome to Sports Hawaii.  Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Tia:   Aloha nō e Sports Hawaii!  I am excited to be the newest Sports Angel!  I went to Aiea High School and recently graduated from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa with a degree in English.  I plan on being an elementary school educator and a writer.  In my free time, I like to surf, read books, and hang out with my three younger sisters.

Sports Hawaii: What are your favorite sports to watch and play?

Tia:   I grew up playing basketball, football, and I recently started surfing.  I am a big fan of Warrior Football.  In fact, I know Miah Ostrowski, really nice guy, we went to elementary school together!  It  is awesome that he plays for the Warriors, just another reason for me to cheer for them!

Sports Hawaii:  Being an English Major and an avid reader, are there any books you can recommend to SH that can help to “culture” us a little?

Tia: (Laughs) Of course I do! So many great books it’s hard to narrow it down!  Okay. Here are a few you guys should check out:  The Guardian, by Nicholas Sparks, The Hound of the Baskersvilles, by Conan Doyle, and The Mysterious Stranger No. 44, by Mark Twain. They are all super exciting and I’m sure you guys will like them. ;-)

Sports Hawaii: Whoa, those look a little above our reading level, we will stay with the sports section for now.   What about movies?  TV shows?

Tia:  For movies, my all time favorite is The Bourne Trilogy. For comedy I think Rush Hour is my favorite but I love anything with Adam Sandler or Will Ferrell, they’re so hilarious!  Ooh and of course, Tristan and Isolde, as my favorite chick flick. :)   For TV shows, I have the entire collection of Friends on DVD at home; I put it on every once in a while because it always puts me in a good mood, non-stop laughter. ^_^  More recently though, I have been getting into Desperate Housewives, there is so much drama!

Sports Hawaii:  Friends?  Were you even born then?  Scott here at SH was 30 years old when that show came out…..By the way, Scott also makes us ask the following question to every Sports Angel:  What do you look for in a guy?

Tia:  Hmmm….  Well a guy definitely has to have a sense of humor, he has to be able to make me laugh.  He has to be sweet and romantic of course.  But what appeals to me the most is when a guy is smart!  I love nerds!  I like being with someone who I can learn something from everyday.  As far as looks go, physical appearance only lasts so long, so to me, it isn’t that important. ;-)

Sports Hawaii:  Well, Scott does have two of those those attributes….  What are your turn-offs?

Tia:  Arrogance in a guy is a huge turn off. There is a very fine line between confidence and arrogance.  However, confidence in a guy is sexy.

Sports Hawaii:   At SH, we are confident that we are not arrogant…  What is the worst pick up line you ever heard?

Tia:   Easy one, “Get out of the rain, because sugar melts”.  Oh, that was soooo bad, I thought he was joking….

Sports Hawaii:  What is your favorite food?  Give us some recommendations where we should go to eat.

Tia:  I love sushi.  My all time favorite is Sushi Spot in Aiea, the “Dragon Roll” is the BEST.  I also love Ninja Sushi and Manoa sushi. Oh, I almost forgot Shokudo, yummmm.

Sports Hawaii:   We will definitely check those places out.  Who is the most influential person in your life?

Tia:  My late grandfather is the most influential person in my life to this day.  When I was very little, I remember watching Friends with him (yes, I was born when Friends started!).   He always pushed me to be the best I could be.  He made me promise him that I would graduate college, to not smoke or do drugs, and to be a good person.  I can still hear his voice today.  Even now, everything I do, I do it to make him proud.  :)

Sports Hawaii:  We are sure you are making him proud.  Halloween is coming up, what are you going to dress up as?

Tia:  I will be dressing up as the Dark Angel, Jessica Alba style.  ;)

Sports Hawaii:   Very nice, that sounds hot!  Thank you so much Tia for being a part of the Sports Hawaii Ohana!  All of us here at SH wish you the very best in all of your future endeavors and God Bless!

Tia:  Aloha Sports Hawaii!  You guys are the best!

What are the keys to UH’s success against San Jose St

Another great post by: sarvicdar

What are the keys to UH’s success against San Jose St

1. UH’s defense stopping San Jose’s TE and WR. One of the quotes I read from one of the San Jose players: “No LB or S can cover our receivers, it’s a mismatch.”

UH’s pass defense (last year and this year) is vulnerable at stopping the underneath/short stuff, which I would expect San Jose to exploit with their TE #82, Ryan Otten, 6-6, 230 and their possesion WR #23, Noel Grisby, 5-10, 170.Both Otten and Grisby are coming off career highs in receptions against BYU, combining for 20 catches of the team’s 25 receptions. Otten was named national player(for TE’s) of the week for his performance against BYU. More on Otten–San Jose State tight end Ryan Otten plenty fast enough to burn opposing defenses (MercuryNews.com)http://www.mercurynews.com/rss/ci_19093188?source=rss

UH historically has trouble stopping opponent’s TE and possesion receivers. i.e., this year’s Washington game (Steferian-Jenkins, Aguilar), UNLV game (Payne).

2. Stopping San Jose’s star RB, #9, Brandon Rutley, 5-10, 190. He’s been San Jose’s spark in wins against New Mexico St. (205 yrds. rushing, 2 tds.) and Colorado St. (130 yrds. rushing, 2 tds.). He was held out of the BYU game due to an injury and is a game time decision against Hawaii. If Rutley plays, UH will have it’s hands full.

3. Moniz finding the answer of exploiting San Jose’s zone pass defense (?).San Jose’s #81, S, James Orth, 6-2, 190, 3 interceptions on the year, might be a player that comes in the way of Moniz finding success in the San Jose’s secondary. Keep an eye on Orth. And the other safety, #2, Duke Ihenacho, 6-1, 210. Moniz has attempted his last 135 passes without an interception. This game will be a good challenge for Moniz. If the San Jose defense gets consistent pressure on Moniz then it might be a bigger challenge for Moniz.

4. UH’s defense putting pressure on the San Jose QB, #7, Matt Faulkner, 6-2, 205. Faulkner against BYU showed that he’s an accurate passer, completing 71 % of his passes 25/35, has good mobility, evaded the BYU rush (and on the year showed that he’s a capable running with the ball). Faulkner has a QB rating of sub 100, and the slight on him is that at times makes bad decisions. If he overcomes making bad desicions then UH will face a bigger challenge against San Jose. San Jose’s offensive line yielded no QB sacks against New Mexico State, Nevada, and only gave up one against BYU.

5. UH offensive line giving Moniz time to pass the ball. On the year San Jose’s defense ranks near the botttom at getting to the opposing QBs (sacks).

6. San Jose’s #31, LB, Keith Smith, 6-2, 225, will be all over the field. Smith was in on 16 tackles against BYU.He is to San Jose’s defense as Paredes is to UH’s.

7. UH’s special teams. On paper Phil Steele rates San Jose’s ST in the 60′s and UH’s in the 90′s for good reasons. UH has allowed 6 blocked kicks this year. Also UH’s ST allows opponents shorter fields by consitently have short kick offs.

8. How UH reacts to San Jose’s home coming crowd. National TV. Hoopla. Pressure. Expectations.

9. How UH reacts to San Jose not commiting penalties (none against BYU), playing smart and disciplined football.

10. How UH reacts to the bye week. Rusty? Out of rythum? Or polished? Well rested? Healed? Or complacent?

11. How UH handles playing in a night game and on a Friday.Historically I don’t think UH has done well on non Saturday playing days.

12. How UH handles the turnover battle.

13. How UH handles tackling, plays assignment football, minimizes miscues. How UH handles a multiple offense (similiar to UNLV?), (Washington?).

14. How UH comes out hot or cold, up or down, pumped or flat, smart or not smart.

15. Battle in the trenches. Battle on the sidelines, coaches making adjustments, counters.

Personally UH has to bring it’s top game to San Jose. Their team is hungry. This game is like San Jose’s bowl game, and first national television appearance since 2008. The San Jose players (I’d imagine) look at this game with chip on their shoulder and UH as having a target on it’s back, especially since UH is being projected to win the WAC etc. But more than anything San Jose is on the rise, wants to make a statement, wants to make up for the two overtime wins UH escaped with at San Jose in the last two times out, wants to make their homecoming crowd happy. I don’t think this is an easy game for Hawaii. It should be interesting and a fun game to watch.

Warrior Forever: Jeff Sydner

Warrior Forever: Jeff Sydner
by Sam Murai

Aloha Sports Hawaii Fans!  Periodically we will catch up with a Warrior athlete of the past.  If you have a favorite athlete you would like us to catch up with, send your suggestion to scott@sportshawaii.com.

For three seasons, from 1989 to 1991, Hawaii fans were electrified by all-purpose back, Jeff the “Silk” Sydner.  Sydner brought excitement to Aloha Stadium from his roles on offense (used as a receiver and a running back) and special teams.  There has never been a more versatile and exciting player in Warrior history.

Hawaii vs BYU 1990 \”Heisman Pose\” by: 2120kaohu

Over the last decade, many records for Hawai’i have been broken in large part because of Hawai’i spread offense.  It is a testament to Sydner’s talent and importance to Hawai’i's offense at that time, that Sydner’s 1,958 total all-purpose yards remains at #1 in Hawaii’s record book.  Considering that Hawai’i's offense during that time was primarily run first, Sydner’s record becomes even more impressive.  In 1990 alone, Sydner rushed for 390 yards (7.0 ypc), received for 820 yards (17.4 ypc), returned kicks and punts for 748 yards, and had a team leading 12 touchdowns.

Sydner’s impact during his playing time here remains entrenched in Hawaii’s record book with two of Hawaii’s Top Ten seasons for all-purpose yards.

Never before, and perhaps not until Chad Owens arrived at Hawaii, would Hawaii fans be so captivated with a simple punt or kick return.  Aloha Stadium would erupt in gasps and “Oohs” when Sydner received the opening kick and made his first move to daylight.

As a Junior in 1990, Sydner was nominated for the Heisman trophy.  As luck would have it, BYU’s Ty Detmer would win the Heisman Trophy the day they played Hawaii at Aloha Stadium.  Throughout Hawaii’s thrashing of BYU 59-28, 45,000 plus Hawaii fans roared, “Sydner should have got it!  Sydner should have got it!”

*********

Four years ago,  Hawaii fans across the state breathed a sigh of relief, and perhaps let out a cheer, as Hawaii’s Heisman Candidate Colt Brennan announced he would stay for his Senior year.   Most Hawaii fans also remember that scenario had played itself out 16 years earlier with a much different result.

Sydner was again on the Heisman watch list as a returning Senior.  Unlike Brennan however, Sydner chose to leave early for the NFL.  It was crushing for many Hawaii fans when Sydner left Hawaii after just three years.

Jeff Sydner is still many of Hawaii fans all-time favorite Warrior.  During his time here, Sydner and his fellow Warriors laid the foundation for Hawaii to become a competitive, nationally recognized program.  Never before, and not for another decade, would Hawaii have a true game changer like Sydner.

Fans have always wondered, what would have happened if he stayed for his Senior year?  Hawaii finished the year after he left 11-2 and ranked  #20 in the Nation.  Would they have gone undefeated?  What would his numbers be like in Hawaii’s current offense? Six hundred yards rushing, 1,100 yards receiving, and 700 yards in returns in a single season seems possible…

Sports Hawaii was able to catch up with Jeff in New Orleans, where he is currently a manager at Lowe’s.

Sports Hawaii:  Aloha Jeff!  Thanks so much for doing this for Sports Hawaii.  We are sure that there a lot of readers out there wondering what you have been up to.  Do you have a family?

Thanks Sports Hawaii, I am humbled to be remembered by so many back there in the Islands.   I have my beautiful wife, Natevia,  my oldest son, Jeff (18), my middle son, Christian (14), my youngest son, Quincy (18 months), and my beautiful daughter, Sydney (13). They are the greatest gifts I could have ever received.

Sports Hawaii:  We have heard your eldest son, Jeffrey,  is quite the football player like his dad.  His highlight video can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-6BwCMepMNc .  He appears to have size and speed.  Has he shown any interest in playing for Hawai’i?

My son is going to be something very special, he has grown into his own the last two years.  Jeffrey is a Senior corner  for Seven Lakes H.S. In Katy, Texas.  He will be quite the find for the college team that picks him up.  I spoke with Rich Miano about him earlier this year. We have also been in contact with Colorado, Georgia and Penn State. He has great cover skills as a corner, good size, and a knack for hitting. As far as going to Hawai’i, I would love to have a reason to relocate to the Islands!   Jeffrey will get a shot at the next level, and thus this is a very exciting time for him. I am so proud of him. He is a fine young man; very respectful, and a solid student.

Sports Hawaii:  Speaking for the fans in Hawaii, we hope he gets an offer to play for UH.  Coach Mac, are you reading this?  How often have you been back to Hawaii since leaving? You mentioned to us you were going to visit early next year, when was that?

I have returned to Hawai’i twice since leaving, however I will always have family there. I am to this day, very close with John Veneri and his family:  his dad (Pops), his mom, and his younger brother Mark, who I still call “Little Mark”.  The Veneri’s are my anchor to what I still consider my second home. I will be returning to Hawai’i  around April of next year with my wife and my youngest son. I really want them to experience first hand the magic of Hawaii and meet the second family which made it possible for me to survive so far from home.

Off the field, I had a lot of great memories!   One experience that really opened my eyes up to Hawai’i and the people there, was going to the Big Island and spending the day with John Veneri’s Grandparents (my Grandparents as well).   It was one of the most special life experiences I have ever had. John and I shot a video of that trip, which I still frequently watch to this day for memory’s sake. The Veneri’s are some of the most caring and special people I have ever had the pleasure of Loving.   Only they will know this quote, this is for Pops, “He’s Hurt!”.  Pops, call me when you see this. LOL!

As far as food, L&L’s was by far my favorite place to eat. Lemon chicken, mac salad, and rice. I really was close with the owners of the one in Puck’s Alley; they kept my picture up on the wall even after I returned several years later.  What a great feeling!   John Veneri told me that they have since closed down.  That broke my heart.

Sports Hawaii:  All of us at SH remember that L&L and your picture on the wall very well…   We are sure that beating Heisman Winner Ty Detmer and #4 Ranked BYU in 1990 was a memorable game for you, but is there another game that stands out for you?

The week before we played BYU, we played Colorado State and one of my favorite coaches, Earl Bruce.   In the first half, I was tackled on a punt return and broke my ribs.  I was sitting on the training table at halftime, and the athletic trainers were telling me that I shouldn’t go back in the game.   I told the trainers to wrap me up, quitting was not an option.  When I came out through the tunnel, I was stunned by the roar of the crowd and applause I was getting!  Just….WOW!  At that moment, I felt the fans appreciation.  The Hawaii’i fans were all that I needed to keep me playing the rest of the game.  My pain was a small price to pay for the respect I earned from my team and fans that day.

Sports Hawaii:  Many of us were at that game, and we are happy to hear that our applause and appreciation for you helped you during that time.  Do you ever regret leaving early for the NFL?  A lot of Hawai’i fans were saddened by your early departure.  How was your NFL experience for you?

I have no regrets leaving early.  But,  I am sure my response would be different if I had not made it!   At that point in my life, I truly believed it was my time to move on. The success I had and life lessons I had learned while in Hawaii proved to be the key for me to make it in the NFL.  Every year I had to weather a storm  in the  NFL, it was never a given I would make the team. My whole NFL experience was very stressful, but the most rewarding experience of my life.  It’s a cliche, but the game of football prepared me for Life.  The experience of playing and surviving at the highest level of football, indirectly made me a stronger leader. Being a store manager with Lowe’s, I realize now that my NFL experience prepared me to lead and develop others.  I feel privileged that my experiences and life lessons can impact people daily in a positive way; teaching and managing my team is a very rewarding experience.

Sports Hawaii:  Do you still keep up with Hawai’i Warrior Football?

Because of the time difference, I am usually sleeping when Hawai’i plays.  Occasionally, when I have a bout with insomnia, I will watch one or two games.  Surprisingly though, my staff at Lowe’s keeps me posted on Warrior Football!  When Hawai’i came to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl I was able to catch up with a bunch of old team mates.

Sports Hawaii:  When you played for Hawai’i you put up monster numbers in a run first offense.  We can only imagine what your numbers would be like today in Hawai’i's spread attack.  Ever look at Hawai’i's offense now and wonder what kind of numbers you would have put up?

No, not really….  My teammates and I took full advantage of whatever offense was given to us back then.  I do know this, we put the ball in the end zone a lot.

Sports Hawaii:  You played four seasons in the NFL, does that mean you are tenured and get a pension? Did you follow the latest NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement? Did it matter to you?

Yes, I can receive my pension as early as age 45, which is only 3 years away, can you believe that? I still feel like I am 20!   I did not follow the collective bargaining too much, but I was pleased to see my retirement allowance was boosted as a result!

Sports Hawaii:  Tell us your funniest story while at UH playing football.

LOL!  I clearly remember one day at practice, Akili Calhoun was told to do some crab crawl drills.  Akili was pissed about something and was throwing a fit.  Akili took off his helmet, and threw his helmet half way to the moon!  Akili then yelled at the assistant coach who told him to crab crawl, “NO, YOU CRAB CRAWL!”    The assistant coach looked at Coach Ellerson (current Army Head Coach) for assistance and Coach Ellerson shrugged his shoulders and said, “ I suggest you get started”.  No one could believe it, but the assistant coach started crab crawling.

Sports Hawaii:  Akili Calhoun was one heck of a big and intimidating Warrior….. Did you know back then, or even now, how special you were/are to the Hawai’i football program?

It felt special back then, but at the time I never lost sight of my responsibility as a student athlete.  I never saw myself as an individual and did very little without John Veneri, Darrick Branch, and Brian Gordon (who was my high school quarterback). My success was my teams’ success.   We kept each other grounded.

Every now and then, it registers with me how blessed I was to have that kind of success while at UH.  One day, my son called me to his room and said,  “Dad I am so proud of you!”  I said, “What’s up?”   He pulled out his NCAA 2012 Play Station 3 game and said “You were so good you are on Hawai’i's All-Time Team!”  My heart swelled to see my son be able to attach himself to me in that way.   It was cool knowing that I had served not only as a day to day father for him, but I had also given him something to be proud of.   That moment brought tears to my eyes.   I sure felt special then.

SportsHawaii.com interview with Heather Faustin

Sports Hawaii: Hey Heather, welcome to SportsHawaii.  Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Heather:   Thanks guys!  Currently, I go to school full time at Chaminade University and I am just one semester away from getting my degree in Psychology, yay!  I plan on enrolling in the Master’s Program and eventually pursuing a career as a Psychologist.  I grew up in Makakilo and attended Hanalani School in Mililani.  I am a mix of Filipino, Portuguese, and Caucasian.

Sports Hawaii: What are your favorite sports to watch and play?

Heather:   I grew up playing volleyball, basketball, and track.  But, my real passion is surfing!  I have entered into several competitive surf events and am blessed to be sponsored by a couple great surf companies, Honey Girl Water Wear and Flojos.  Growing up in Hawaii, I can’t help but be a big fan of Warrior Football.  Go Warriors!

Sports Hawaii:  You are one athletic girl.   Do you have any interesting hobbies?

Heather: Just one: surfing!  If the waves are right, you will find me at Big Rights in Town, or in Haleiwa, at Ali’i Beach.
Sports Hawaii: What was the best pick up line you ever heard? Did it work?

Heather:  None.  I do the picking up, and it works!  ;)

Sports Hawaii:  Wow, that would be one lucky guy.  Anything in particular you look for in a guy?

Heather:  A guy has to have a sense of humor.  Life is too fun to not have someone else sharing in your laughter and making you laugh as well!

Sports Hawaii:  We are pretty funny here at Sports Hawaii….Name one TV Show you can’t live without.

Heather:  Grey’s Anatomy.  I have Seasons 1 through 7 on disc at home. Love it!

Sports Hawaii:   Name your favorite actor and actress.  What are your three favorite movies?
Heather:   Oooooh, Paul Walker, he is  my kind of guy!  I love Katherine Heigl, she seems down to earth and yet she is so funny!  Three movies I can always watch over and over again?  That would be Andy Irons and Kelly Slater’s A Fly in the Champagne  and The Hangover, Parts 1 and 2.

Sports Hawaii:  Scott here at SportsHawaii just called to say he looks like Paul Walker…  What are your biggest turn offs?

Heather:  For me waxed eyebrows are a no no. Manicured…maybe, but not more than mine! Also, lets not be too sensitive guys! I’m sarcastic, you better handle it and embrace it, otherwise I’m probably not the girl you should be talking too!

Sports Hawaii:   We just let Scott know that he needs to stop waxing his eyebrows…he was  whimpering as he hung up.  What would be your perfect day?

Heather:   Surfing in the morning, hiking in the afternoon, and following that up with Teddy’s Bigger Burger topped with avocados and bacon and a chocolate peanut butter shake!  I love to eat!

Sports Hawaii:   Mmmm, you are making us hungry…  Do you have any pets?

Heather:  I have a dog, an Australian Blue Heeler named Polu, and I also have a monkey named Bobo, that my friend is taking care of in Bali.

Sports Hawaii:   A monkey?  Bali?  What is going on over there?

Heather:  Oh, I have been to Bali a couple of times for our church, to spread my love for God and my passion for surfing!  I usually spend about three weeks there at a time spending time with the locals, giving out donations, and teaching people how to surf.  We have started a surf team called BRL, Believe, Receive, and Live.  Our goals are simple:  Travel, Surf, and Spread the Word.  My time spent in Bali has been the most inspirational event in my life!  I love it there!  As far as Bobo, he is the cutest monkey in the world, and I can’t wait to be back there with him.  My friend in Bali takes care of him while I am away.

Sports Hawaii:   You do know they eat monkeys over there?….Who is the most important person in your life?

Heather:  Ooooooo, you guys are mean!  They don’t eat monkeys over there!  I don’t want to sound cliché, but the most important person in my life is my mom.  My mom is always there for me and supports me in everything I do in her own motherly way.  I love you Mom!

Sports Hawaii:   Thank you so much Heather for being a part of the Sports Hawaii Ohana!  This was an awesome interview and the Sports Hawaii Ohana really appreciates it! Good luck to you on all of your future endeavors and God Bless!
Heather:  Thanks so much, Sports Hawaii!  It was so much fun doing this interview and being a Sports Hawaii Angel!  God Bless!
